Final lunar eclipse of the decade Sunday

Final lunar eclipse of the decade Sunday

The only total lunar eclipse of 2019, it gets underway Sunday just after 9:30 p.m., according to NASA.

Experts say the optimal viewing time will be between 4.41am and 5.43am and that this is the period of totality, where the moon lies entirely in the earth's umbra (full shadow) and will appear red, when it is called a blood moon.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned between the sun and the moon, casting the moon completely in the Earth's shadow and giving it an orangish, "bloody" look.

If it is a cloud-free night then you could be rewarded with a spectacular sight.

You'll be able to see the first hints of the eclipse at about 9:30 PM Eastern Time on Sunday as the moon slides into the penumbra (the Earth's shadow). "But it's really just a full lunar eclipse".

This map shows locations worldwide from which the january 20 total lunar eclipse is visible, weather permitting. And that's because the only light the moon gets is from sunlight reflecting off the Earth and the Earth's atmosphere. It's unknown if the moon will turn a coppery red or remain dark, which is another possibility. Brutally cold air will arrive later Sunday into Monday night. Lastly, but most impressively, it's also a total lunar eclipse.

Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood, will also broadcast the event here, beginning when the moon rises on the West Coast, at about 8:10 p.m. EST (5:10 p.m. PST). Farther south, the moon will appear even higher.

As many as 2.8 billion people may see this weekend's eclipse from the Western Hemisphere, Europe, West Africa and northernmost Russian Federation, according to Space.com.

From start to finish, Sunday's lunar eclipse should last about five hours, according to figures released by NASA.

And because the Full Moon in January, according to the Farmers' Almanac, is referred to as the Wolf Moon, the word "Wolf" is added, too.

You can also look for livestreams of the "super blood wolf moon" eclipse if it won't be visible where you are. The Moon is given the name Super Moon when a full moon comes within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth.

On Sunday, the second partial phase ends at 10:50 p.m.

On Feb. 19 our satellite will be 221,681 miles (356,761km) from Earth - the closest it gets - to create the biggest supermoon of the year. The reddish light that reflects back toward us gives the moon a blood-red tone. That is the point where the moon will have that red-orange tint.

The York County Astronomical Society has invited the public to peer through its observatory's telescopes for a close-up look In Pennsylvania. while extremely large crowds are expected in Los Angeles, some website will live-stream a telescopic view of the eclipse.
