Travellers feel effects of US shutdown as delays hit Canadian airports

Martin says safety is being maintained during a period of "minimal impacts" on travel.

Delays are being reported at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Dulles International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, including flights to LaGuardia that are delayed by more than one hour, according to the FAA.

Negotiations that jump-started late Thursday are focused on a bipartisan proposal for a three-week stopgap funding measure that would reopen lapsed agencies and allow time for haggling over what has become the main budget impasse: President Donald Trump's insistence on a US-Mexico border wall.

With the government temporarily reopening, it would appear they do. "I wish I could say I was shocked, Brian, but this is the cost of the shutdown".

The LaGuardia delay, which was scheduled to last until 10:45am ET, according to the FAA website, resulted in flights being grounded for an average of 41 minutes. "As we have seen over the past 35 days, the pressures and strains of a shutdown are not sustainable".

"If it were a compromise, the president would have talked to us about it", said Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia. Transportation Security Agency (TSA) employees are also working overtime without pay, and many have called in sick during the shutdown so that they can work other jobs.

"No one can predict what impact it will have as it continues", Southwest chief executive Gary Kelly said of the shutdown on Thursday. They have been doing unbelievably heroic work even as they are betrayed by the government that employs them. "So if we have to slow things down and things take a little longer, that's what we're going to do".

The restriction was lifted at LaGuardia again at 10:37 a.m., after an hour and 22 minutes, but has caused significant residual delays for travelers.

"The President has been briefed and we are monitoring the ongoing delays at some airports".

In Toronto, at least six flights to LaGuardia by Air Canada, Delta, Air France, WestJet and American Airlines were cancelled and two were delayed by early afternoon. Florida's International Airport is also facing the same staff shortage, and flights are being delayed and cancelled there as well.

Devine said the people he represents work in a job where "they have to be right 100 per cent of the time" or tragedy could strike, but that the shutdown has made that more hard.

Weeks into the government shutdown, employees at airports nationwide have felt the effects and amid concerns that a decrease in the workforce could sacrifice safety and hinder travel, flights into a NY airport were delayed.

The unions - which represent almost 20,000 air traffic controllers, 61,000 pilots and just under 50,000 flight attendants - said the temporary shuttering of airport screening checkpoints is likely to continue.

"...we are not experiencing any impacts due to the government shutdown in the United States", an email to NEWS 1130 from YVR reads.
