Trump Administration Accepts Guaido Ally as Venezuela Envoy in U.S.

Maduro has accused Washington of being behind an attempted coup and has cut diplomatic ties.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido says he is going to put a spotlight on authorities responsible for killing anybody demonstrating against socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

So far, Canada and several European countries have heeded the United States' call. Invoking constitutional provisions, National Assembly leader Guaido declared himself interim president until there are new elections.

As the deadline expired, Maduro said he had begun negotiations to set up within 30 days an Interests Section in Caracas to maintain a minimum level of diplomatic contact, similar to the arrangement the USA had with Cuba until their 2015 rapprochement.

The statement from Australian foreign affairs minister, Marise Payne, follows a threat from European leaders on Sunday to recognise Guaidó unless Maduro calls an election in the next eight days.

"Australia calls for a transition to democracy in Venezuela as soon as possible", Senator Payne said. Some military commanders ripped the handouts apart, but no violence was reported.

The Fort of Paramacay, about two hours west of the Capital Caracas, was itself the site of an uprising in 2017, when a group of about 20 soldiers and armed civilians attacked the base.

President Donald Trump's national security adviser is sending a new warning to the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. He said Venezuela doesn't threaten worldwide peace and security, and he accused "extremist opponents" of Maduro's government of choosing "maximum confrontation", including the artificial creation of a parallel government.

He "asked the Lord to seek and find a just and peaceful solution to overcome the crisis that respects human rights and exclusively seeks the good of all people".

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a tweet that "the Venezuelan people must be able to freely decide on their future".

The Venezuelan leader told the Turkish network he has sent many messages to President Trump but has not received a response because "I think he's overwhelmed with his domestic problem and, I believe, I think he despises us".

Recalling that the United Nations secretary-general had offered his good offices to help resolve the crisis, DiCarlo stressed at Saturday's meeting that the main concern is the well-being of the Venezuelan people and their ability to enjoy their full rights.

During the debate, which was requested by the U.S., Pompeo urged all nations to end Venezuela's "nightmare" and to support Guaido.

Maduro gave USA diplomats 72 hours to leave the country, but the Trump administration said it wouldn't comply, arguing that Maduro is no longer Venezuela's legitimate president.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the UN to recognize Guaido as Venezuela's "interim president" and declared "now it is time for every other nation to pick a side".

Venezuela's Foreign Ministry says it has extended a deadline for USA diplomats to leave following it's rupture in relations. Maduro has since backed down and has agreed to 30 days to finalize the diplomats' roles in Venezuela.
