Trump walks out of meeting as White House confab devolves

The impasse between Congress and the White House appeared to hit another snag Wednesday when Trump walked out of a White House meeting with congressional leaders, calling the discussions a "total waste of time".

Pelosi, who delivered the first part of the Democratic rebuttal Tuesday night, said Americans "all agree that we need to secure our borders while honoring our values".

Trump did not talk about declaring a national emergency, she noted. "So she can talk about scanning cars and drones - [but] unless you have a barrier to prevent that foot from hitting USA soil, we will not solve the illegal immigration crisis that we're facing".

The partial government shutdown reached its 18th day on Tuesday, making the closure the second-longest in history, and continued on Wednesday.

And Trump said that the government remains shut down "for one reason and one reason only: because Democrats will not fund border security".

There's growing concern about the toll the shutdown is taking on everyday Americans, including disruptions in payments to farmers and trouble for home buyers who are seeking government-backed mortgage loans - "serious stuff", according to Sen. The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a 30-foot wall. Trump acknowledged on Tuesday that his long-proposed idea for a massive border wall is "medieval"-but he spun that as a positive". But he did not mention that Tuesday night.

Mrs. Pelosi has called border walls "immoral" and refused to give an inch in negotiations over Mr. Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for new barriers, Border Patrol agents, immigration judges and other tools to stem illegal immigration.

Is he exactly the player [he was] in his best time at Leipzig? He's still adapting, that's how it is. And he was looking forward to seeing them both play, but in particular Englishman Jones.

When she said no, Trump said "goodbye", Pence said.

Pence told the group that Trump won't retreat.

With his use of a formal White House speech instead of his favored Twitter blasts, Trump is embracing the ceremonial trappings of his office as he tries to exit a political quagmire of his own making. Critics say the security risks are overblown and the administration is at least partly to blame for the humanitarian situation. Some say Trump's hardline policies are slowing processing for migrants, creating an overwhelming bottleneck at the border. The White House team included the added scanners and manpower at ports of entry that Democrats support. "We can protect the border using the technology that's available to us to wall off intrusions by using that technology", the South Carolina Democrat said on CNN.

With Schumer's hunched body hulking beside Nancy Pelosi's uncomfortable stiffness, the odd-pairing echoed that of an illustration straight from the pages of Alvin Schwartz's "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark".

In a pre-emptive move, the White House said Monday that tax refunds would be paid despite the shutdown.

The fact is: President Trump has chosen to hold hostage critical services for the health, safety and well-being of the American people and withhold the paychecks of 800,000 innocent workers across the nation - many of them veterans.

"I view that as absolutely Mexico is paying for the wall", Trump said.
