White House blasts report saying Federal Bureau of Investigation probed whether Trump worked for Russian Federation

Experts quickly laughed off Giuliani's assertion that the president can "correct" an investigative report into his own actions.

Comey's firing, rather than ending the Russian Federation investigation, led directly to the appointment, over Trump's objections, of Mueller, another former FBI director, to take over the Russian Federation probe.

The White House on Friday night dismissed The New York Times report as "absurd". Investigators also had to ascertain whether the president was knowingly, or possibly unwittingly, under Russian influence.

Mr. Whitaker took over supervision of Mr. Mueller's investigation on 7 November after President Trump appointed him as the chief U.S. law enforcement official to replace Jeff Sessions, who the president ousted.

The grand jury empaneled by the special counsel has been extended for another six months, however, signaling that the probe may continue beyond the winter.

Also fueling the FBI's concerns was Christopher Steele's "dirty dossier" of unsubstantiated allegations, which had been funded by Democrats but at that point was justifying probes across the Justice Department.

"James Comey was sacked because he's a disgraced partisan hack", Sanders continued, "and his Deputy Andrew McCabe, who was in charge at the time, is a known liar fired by the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

"No evidence has emerged publicly that Trump was secretly in contact with or took direction from Russian government officials", The New York Times said. No longer is this about what Manafort did prior to ever even entering Trump's orbit.

The investigation the FBI opened into Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has always been publicly known: whether his firing of Comey constituted obstruction of justice.

'And in fact, when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself - I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story.

"Unlike President Obama, who let Russia and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russia", Sanders said.
