Winter storm hits US Midwest leaving at least five dead

The winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Monday.

The storm caused dozens of vehicle crashes Friday and Saturday afternoon in Jefferson City as motorists slid off slick roadways. Officials are warning of downed trees, power outages and impacts on transportation.

The storm barrelled through parts of the Midwest, with eastern Kansas and western Missouri seeing their highest snow totals in several years, according to the National Weather Service.

Another crash involving two semitrailers in snowy conditions killed a 41-year-old driver from Mexico.

No fatalities were reported, but six people were reported injured at the time. More than 30 of those crashes and half of those disabled vehicles were in the Fairfax district, VSP said. The station said passenger Theresa Cook said there were no injuries.

"We've had a couple patrol cars struck in the last 24 hours because of that", he said.

Springfield's State Journal-Register reports that the state capital broke a 55-year record for daily snowfall on Saturday.

Both victims reported the attacks to police but for more than two decades the DNA collected did not match any suspects in an Federal Bureau of Investigation database, Braun said.

Cooper's office says almost 1,000 state Department of Transportation workers also are working to clear snow and ice.

The moisture and duration of the storm made it unique, Maples said.

Philadelphia is expected to receive a few inches of snow, but areas north of there are expected to be spared, Orrison added. Forecasters said heavy snow could fall in mountain areas north of Interstate 64, such as Charlottesville and Staunton, Va. Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday night to help the state of Virginia prepare.

The storm disrupted air travelers as well as those on the road. On Saturday, county crews focused on getting roads open.

"This storm may become an overachiever when it comes to snow and ice".

Throughout the day, small power outages affected dozens of Ameren Missouri and Three Rivers Electric Cooperative customers in the Jefferson City area. "In fact, it's possible that areas near the (Wisconsin) state line (will) end up with very little snow". The snow had tapered off by the time the game started midafternoon, but stadium crews worked for hours before the game to clear the stadium's lot, field and seats in anticipation of a full house for the playoff game.
