With Vic Fangio, Broncos go with experience and toughness

With Vic Fangio, Broncos go with experience and toughness

On Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Fangio has reached an agreement with the team to become their next head coach.

Florio notes that Fangio would allow team president John Elway handpick his coaching staff, which could mean the return of former head coach Gary Kubiak to run the team's offence. At 60 years old and after serving as a defensive coordinator in the league for 19 years, he will be the oldest first-time head coach roaming the sidelines when the 2019 season kicks off.

Vic Fangio has had that kind of impact on the Bears' defense over the past four seasons and that hasn't been lost on those in the National Football League interested in giving him a chance to lead a team for the first time in his career.

He replaces Vance Joseph, who posted the franchise's first back-to-back losing seasons since 1971-72 and was sacked on New Year's Eve with an 11-21 record.

Todd Bowles may not be atop many lists to fill head coaching vacancies, but that doesn't mean he lacks suitors as a coordinator.

It's down to two for the Denver Broncos.

He went 21-11 as the team's head coach. He helped Chicago star Khalil Mack adapt quickly to his defensive scheme after being acquired in a trade from the Raiders just prior to last season. In his final season leading the Bears defense, they ranked as the No. 3 overall defense while boasting the NFL's best run-stopping defense. "Again, I hope that we can hire a guy that can be here for the next 10 years, 15 years". With the Bears since 2015, Fangio also held the same role with San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers.

Fangio has never been a head coach at any level. When the 49ers fired Jim Harbaugh in 2014, they passed on their defensive coordinator in Fangio without even an interview and instead hired his defensive line coach, Jim Tomsula, who was sacked after one season. The group is led by Pro Bowl pass rusher Von Miller.
