Nissan new X-Trail to be made in Japan instead of Sunderland

The Japanese vehicle manufacturer said in 2016 it would be building the new version of the X-Trail SUV at the factory along with its next-generation Qashqai, prompting claims that Nissan and the government had struck a "sweetheart deal" to protect the company from any post-Brexit EU tariff wall.

A senior Nissan boss blasted Brexit "uncertainty" as he confirmed that the company had scrapped plans to build the X-Trail 4x4 at its Sunderland plant.

"While we have taken this decision for business reasons, the continued uncertainty around the U.K.'s future relationship with the European Union is not helping companies like ours to plan for the future", the company's Europe Chairman Gianluca de Ficchy said. Parliament voted last week to give her more time to try to win concessions from the bloc.

"Most of these capabilities were only relevant for us from 2015 onwards and I'm absolutely certain as Home job is to do everything I can to keep this country safe".

‎Ford announced it was cutting jobs in the United Kingdom as part of a regional plan.

The government said at the time that Nissan's commitment showed major manufacturers retained faith in the United Kingdom economy after Brexit.

Japanese firm Honda also announced six non-production days in April under contingency plans to mitigate the risk of disruption to production at its Swindon factory after the United Kingdom leaves the EU. More than two years of political chaos over implanting that decision has put that faith to the test.

As time runs out to secure a Brexit deal, Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to return to Brussels within days in an attempt to re-write the most hard chapter in the agreement she drafted with the European Union a year ago. "I think the people will never forgive us for it, what they want is this Parliament to deliver Brexit in an orderly way, that is what they are looking for".

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said in June that investment in new models, equipment and facilities in the United Kingdom was $A625 million in the first half of the year, compared to $A1.1 billion in the same period of 2017 - a decrease of about half.

Speaking to the BBC on Sunday, Javid said border enforcement officials told him now available technological systems mean there is no need for checkpoints and other infrastructure on the U.K.'s land border with Ireland after Brexit.

"Practically, I don't think it would get a majority because whilst you might gain some Labour votes. you would also lose votes on the Conservative side".

Investment in the industry fell 46 percent previous year and new auto production dropped 9.1 percent to 1.52 million vehicles, in part because of concerns over Brexit, the Society of Motor Manufacturing said. The government expects negotiations to go down to the wire, leaving the threat of a chaotic no-deal split that casts a shadow over companies right up to next month's deadline.

Her comments suggest the final eight weeks until March 29 - the U.K.'s scheduled exit day - will be fraught with tension.
